  • Starts and ends at Arusha Airport. Make your own way there on the first morning; from then on everything listed below is taken care of.
  • Book in two minutes. Choose your date and room below — no payment now. We confirm your seat by email and send the next steps.

Overview

Every year between December and March, the wildebeest herds gather on the short-grass plains of Ndutu in the southern Serengeti to give birth and nurse their young. This specially crafted safari takes you there at the height of the calving season, with visits to Tarangire National Park and the world-renowned Ngorongoro Crater.

This is a joining group safari with a fixed departure on 8 February 2027. You share a 7-seater 4×4 safari vehicle and a professional English-speaking driver-guide with other travellers — every seat is a window seat. The safari starts and ends at Arusha Airport.

Day-by-day itinerary

  1. Day 1: Arusha – Tarangire National Park

We meet at Arusha Airport at 07:00 and, after a short pre-safari briefing, start the adventure. You drive to Tarangire National Park, passing through Arusha city for any last-minute necessities or currency exchange. The route crosses the Maasai steppe and passes many villages before reaching the park gate, where your first game drive in the African wilderness begins.

Tarangire is renowned for its towering baobab trees and large elephant population. Its varied habitats support a wide array of animals and birds, including the rare greater kudu, fringe-eared oryx and ashy starling. Expect lions, cheetahs, giraffes, wildebeest, buffaloes, hippos, warthogs, gazelles, dik-diks, the rare long-necked gerenuk and more.

In the late afternoon you continue to Tarangire Elephant Springs for dinner and the night.

MealsLunch and dinner; soft drinks, beer and wine
  2. Day 2: Tarangire – Ndutu Plains (southern Serengeti)

After breakfast, depart for the Ndutu plains to experience the wildebeest calving season in the southern Serengeti.

Game drive in search of the great herds of wildebeest, zebra and gazelle, or a pride of lions lounging in the shade. The south is dominated by lush grassy plains that draw about two million wildebeest, half a million zebra and some quarter of a million antelope when the rains come.

Dinner and overnight at Woodlands Camp.

MealsBreakfast, lunch and dinner; soft drinks, beer and wine
  3. Day 3: The Ndutu calving plains

Spend the whole day exploring the Ndutu plains, in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area on the edge of the southern Serengeti. Between January and March the wildebeest give birth here to thousands of calves. The lush pastures and nutrient-rich soil attract herds of wildebeest, zebra and gazelle stretching across vast areas — and you have a unique chance to see predators in action as they hunt the newborn calves.

You can also choose a walking safari with an armed ranger, for a close encounter with wildlife and insights from trained naturalists and rangers. Bird lovers will delight in Ndutu, with more than 400 resident and migratory species recorded.

In the late afternoon, return to Woodlands Camp for dinner and the night.

MealsBreakfast, lunch and dinner; soft drinks, beer and wine
  4. Day 4: Ndutu – Central Serengeti

Head north to the central Serengeti around the Seronera River, one of the park's permanent water sources and vital in the dry season. Along the river and among the kopjes you can spot many bird species, big cats and other wildlife. A stop at the Seronera Visitor Centre gives a short introduction to the great Serengeti National Park.

    Overnight at Serengeti Sametu Camp.

MealsBreakfast, lunch and dinner; soft drinks, beer and wine
  5. Day 5: Central Serengeti – Ngorongoro

After breakfast, collect a picnic lunch and game drive on your way towards Ngorongoro. The Serengeti, one of the largest parks in Africa at about 15,000 km², is home to some three million large mammals across a great variety of landscapes.

Dinner and overnight at Ngorongoro Lion's Paw.

MealsBreakfast, picnic lunch and dinner; soft drinks, beer and wine
  6. Day 6: Ngorongoro Crater – Arusha

After an early breakfast, collect a picnic lunch and drive to the Ngorongoro Crater. You descend more than 600 metres down the crater walls to the floor for a thrilling game drive. Formed millions of years ago, the crater is about 29 kilometres across and, with water all year round, holds an estimated 20,000 animals — one of the best chances to see the Big Five, including the elusive black rhino and leopard. Expect lions, hyenas, cheetahs, jackals, eland, elephants, buffaloes, warthogs and hippos at their pool in the middle of the crater.

In the late afternoon, drive back to Arusha, where you are dropped off at Arusha Airport. End of our services.
