Getting to JRO
Kilimanjaro International Airport has direct and connecting flights from Europe, the Middle East and other African cities. Airlines and routes change, so check current schedules — common connections run through hubs such as Amsterdam, Doha, Istanbul, Addis Ababa, Nairobi and Dar es Salaam. From Zanzibar and Dar es Salaam there are frequent domestic flights.
Some regional and safari flights use the smaller Arusha Airport (ARK) instead, closer to Arusha town. Check which airport your domestic flights use.
On arrival
- Fill in the arrival form on the plane or in the hall.
- At immigration, show your passport and printed e-visa grant notice — see our visa guide. Have your yellow fever certificate ready if your route needs one.
- Collect your bags and pass through customs. Plastic carrier bags are banned in Tanzania.
- Meet your driver in the arrivals area.

Transfers
Airport transfers are part of our climbs and safaris. On our Kilimanjaro climbs, we meet you at JRO and drive you to your lodge in Arusha, where your guide briefs you and checks your gear the evening before the climb. At the end, we drive you back to JRO for your flight home — or on to your safari.
Money and phones
There are ATMs and currency exchange at the airport, and mobile network desks where you can buy a local SIM card with your passport. Bring some small US dollar notes, printed after 2009, for tips. More in our travel advice.
Tips
- Pack climbing essentials — boots, medicines and a warm layer — in your hand luggage, in case a bag is delayed.
- Arrive at least a day before your climb or safari starts to rest and allow for delays.
- For your flight home, plan to arrive at the airport around three hours before an international departure.
