Materuni waterfalls
Above Moshi, the village of Materuni sits among banana and coffee farms on Kilimanjaro's lower slopes. A walk through the farms leads to a tall waterfall in a green gorge — cool, beautiful and a good leg-stretcher before or after a climb. See our Materuni day trip.
Coffee farm tours
Coffee grown on Kilimanjaro's volcanic soils is famous. On a coffee tour, local farmers show you how the beans are picked, dried, roasted by hand and ground — and you drink the result. It combines well with Materuni or Chemka. See the Chemka and coffee tour.
Chemka hot springs
South of Moshi, Chemka (also called Kikuletwa) is a clear, warm, spring-fed pool shaded by fig trees — a wonderful place to swim and relax tired legs after the mountain. See our Chemka day tour.
A day hike on the mountain
Not ready for the summit? A guided day hike on the lower slopes takes you through the rainforest of Kilimanjaro National Park, with colobus monkeys, birds and views of the peak when the cloud lifts.
Moshi town
Moshi is a relaxed town at the foot of the mountain, with markets, cafés, and on clear mornings a view of the snowy summit above the rooftops.
Mount Meru and Arusha National Park
Across the valley, Mount Meru (4,566 m) is a superb climb in its own right and excellent acclimatisation before Kilimanjaro. Its slopes are part of Arusha National Park, where you can walk among giraffes and buffalo with an armed ranger.
Safari after the climb
Most climbers reward themselves with a few days on safari: Tarangire, the Ngorongoro Crater and the Serengeti are a short drive or flight away. Or finish on the beaches of Zanzibar. See all our day trips and safaris.
