In short
- Most visitors need an eTA, applied for online before travel.
- Apply only on the official site: etakenya.go.ke.
- Cost: around US$30–35 including processing; the fee is not refundable.
- Apply at least two weeks before you fly; many are approved within about three days.
Entry rules and fees are set by the Kenyan government and can change. Check the official eTA site before you apply.
What is the Kenya eTA?
In January 2024, Kenya replaced visas for most nationalities with an Electronic Travel Authorisation. It is not a visa, but you must have it before you board your flight — airlines check. It allows a tourist stay of up to 90 days.
Who needs one?
Almost all foreign visitors, including children. Citizens of East African Community partner states are exempt. Check the official site for the current list of exemptions.
How to apply
- Go to the official site, etakenya.go.ke. Avoid look-alike sites that charge extra.
- Upload a scan of your passport photo page and a recent passport-style photo.
- Give your flight details and your first accommodation — your safari itinerary from us covers this.
- Pay the fee by card.
- Download and print your approved eTA, and carry it with your passport.
What you need
- A passport valid for at least six months after arrival, with at least one blank page
- Your return or onward flight details
- Your accommodation or itinerary
- An email address and a payment card
Combining Kenya with Tanzania
If your trip crosses into Tanzania, you need both: a Kenya eTA and a Tanzania visa (see our Tanzania visa guide). If you return to Kenya afterwards — for example to fly home from Nairobi — check whether you need a new eTA for the second entry. Kenya is also listed as a yellow fever risk country, which matters for Tanzania: see Kenya travel requirements and Kenya and Tanzania together.
