Kigali and Things to Do in Rwanda

Beyond the gorillas: a clean, lively capital, a moving memorial, lake shores, rainforest and a living culture. What to see and do in Rwanda.

Updated 27 October 2026 · by the Wild Pride Safaris team

Kigali

Rwanda's capital spreads over green hills and is known across Africa for being clean, safe and orderly. A city tour — included on our trips — introduces its markets, craft shops, cafés and art scene.

The Kigali Genocide Memorial

The memorial tells the story of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, in which around a million people were killed, and of Rwanda's recovery since. A visit is deeply moving and essential to understanding the country today. Allow two hours, dress respectfully and take time afterwards to reflect.

Musanze and the volcanoes

Musanze is the base for Volcanoes National Park. Alongside gorilla trekking, you can trek golden monkeys, hike to Dian Fossey's grave, climb a volcano such as Bisoke, and visit a cultural village to learn about traditional Rwandan life, music and dance. See gorilla trekking.

Lake Kivu

Relax by the water at Rubavu or Karongi: boat trips to islands, swimming, kayaking and sunsets over the lake.

Coffee and tea

Rwanda grows highly regarded coffee on its hills. A coffee experience shows you the journey from cherry to cup; near Nyungwe, tea plantations cover the slopes. Both are part of our 8-day safari.

Nyungwe's canopy walk and chimpanzees

Walk high above the rainforest on a suspended walkway, then track chimpanzees. See Rwanda's national parks.

The King's Palace at Nyanza

The reconstructed royal palace of Rwanda's former kings, with traditional architecture and the long-horned Inyambo cattle — a window into the kingdom's history. Included at the end of our 8-day safari.

A safari in Akagera

Game drives and boat trips among elephants, giraffes, hippos and — again — lions and rhinos.

Culture and courtesy

  • Kinyarwanda is spoken by almost everyone; English, French and Swahili are also official. "Muraho" means hello, "Murakoze" thank you.
  • Rwandans value politeness and calm — greet people and avoid raised voices.
  • Ask before photographing people.
  • Talk about the genocide with care; Rwandans no longer refer to ethnic identities.
  • Plastic bags are banned — carry a reusable bag.

Good to know

On the last Saturday morning of each month, Umuganda community work pauses many services until around midday. Rwanda uses the Rwandan franc (RWF), type C and J sockets, and drives on the right. See visa and entry.
