Arriving
International flights land at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA, code NBO), south-east of the city. Safari flights to the Maasai Mara, Samburu and other parks leave from the smaller Wilson Airport, closer to the centre. Traffic in Nairobi can be heavy, so allow plenty of time between the two. Our Kenya safaris start in Nairobi — see travel requirements for what to have ready on arrival.
Nairobi National Park
Just minutes from the city, Nairobi National Park has lions, rhinos, giraffes, buffalo and many antelope — with the city skyline in the background. A half-day game drive is a perfect way to use an arrival or departure day.
The elephant orphanage
At the edge of the national park, the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust cares for orphaned baby elephants before returning them to the wild. A short public visit lets you watch the young elephants at feeding and mud-bath time. Check opening hours and booking requirements before you go.
The Giraffe Centre
In Karen, the Giraffe Centre protects the endangered Rothschild's giraffe and lets you meet them at eye level from a raised platform — a favourite with families.
Karen Blixen Museum
The farmhouse of the Danish author of Out of Africa, at the foot of the Ngong Hills, is now a museum with gardens — a peaceful stop in the leafy suburb of Karen.

Tips
- Nairobi is at about 1,700 metres, so evenings can be cool — bring a jacket.
- Use taxis or ride-hailing apps rather than walking at night.
- Keep phones out of sight in busy streets.
- Many travellers spend one night in Nairobi before the safari to rest after the flight.
