Etosha National Park is located in northern Namibia, approximately 435 km from the capital, Windhoek. The park covers more than 22,000 square kilometers and is dominated by the massive Etosha Pan, a vast white salt pan that becomes a shimmering oasis after rains. Its well-maintained road network and accessible camps make it one of Africa’s most visitor-friendly safari destinations. The landscape consists of savannah, mopane woodlands, and grasslands that create a perfect habitat for wildlife.
Animals Found:
Etosha is home to an impressive variety of wildlife, making it one of the greatest safari parks in Southern Africa. Visitors can expect to see elephants, giraffes, zebras, lions, leopards, cheetahs, hyenas, black rhinos, and white rhinos. The park is especially famous for its large population of endangered black rhinos. Hundreds of bird species, including flamingos, secretary birds, and vultures, thrive here, especially after seasonal rains.
Best Time to Visit:
The best time to visit Etosha is during the dry season from June to October when animals gather around waterholes, offering exceptional game viewing. During this period, vegetation is thin, making wildlife easier to spot. The dry season is also ideal for photography, as the bright skies and clear conditions create breathtaking landscapes. While the wet season from November to April brings lush greenery, wildlife can be more spread out.
Weather Conditions:
Etosha experiences a typical semi-arid climate. Summers (November–April) are hot with occasional thunderstorms that fill the pan with shallow water. Temperatures can reach up to 35°C (95°F) during the day. Winters (May–September) are dry and cooler, with daytime temperatures around 20–25°C (68–77°F) and very cold nights that may drop below 10°C (50°F). Overall, it is a dry and sunny region for most of the year.
