The Skeleton Coast National Park is located along Namibia’s northwestern Atlantic coastline. It stretches from the Ugab River in the south to the Kunene River near the Angolan border. This remote region is characterized by foggy beaches, towering dunes, deep canyons, and shipwreck remnants. Animals Found:
Although the region appears barren, it supports surprising wildlife. Desert-adapted lions, brown hyenas, jackals, and elephants roam the interior areas. Along the coastline, massive colonies of Cape fur seals dominate the beaches. The park also hosts antelopes, giraffes, rhinos, and scavenging birds. Marine life thrives offshore, supported by the nutrient-rich Benguela Current.
Best Time to Visit:
The best time to visit is during the cool, dry season from May to October, when conditions are more stable and suitable for exploration. Fog is common throughout the year, but late winter and early spring offer clearer days for scenic flights and photography. Because the region is remote, most visitors opt for organized tours anytime from May to November.
Weather Conditions:
The Skeleton Coast is famous for its cold ocean currents and heavy fog that rolls inland almost daily. Temperatures along the coast remain cool year-round, often ranging between 10°C and 20°C (50–68°F). Inland areas can be warmer but still experience strong winds. Rainfall is extremely rare; instead, moisture comes from fog that supports desert life. Weather can be unpredictable, with sudden temperature changes.
