Kibale National Park

Kibale National Park is located in western Uganda near Fort Portal, forming a contiguous forest system with Queen Elizabeth National Park. Known as the “Primate Capital of Africa,” Kibale protects one of the most diverse tropical forests in East Africa. The park is accessible by road from Kampala (~5 hours) and is part of a regional tourism circuit that includes crater lakes and the Rwenzori Mountains.

Animals Found:
Kibale is best known for its large population of chimpanzees, with more than 1,500 individuals living in the forest. Visitors can enjoy chimpanzee tracking and the more immersive chimpanzee habituation experience. The park also hosts red colobus, L’Hoest’s monkeys, blue monkeys, baboons, and over 70 mammal species. Birdlife is remarkable with over 375 species including the green-breasted pitta.

Best Time to Visit:
The best time to visit Kibale is during the dry seasons from December to February and June to September, when forest trails are less slippery. Chimpanzee tracking is possible year-round, but dry months offer the most comfortable trekking conditions. Wet seasons are good for birdwatching but can be more challenging for walking tours.

Weather Conditions:
Kibale receives rainfall throughout the year due to its tropical rainforest climate. Temperatures generally range from 15°C to 27°C (59–80°F). Rainy months peak around March–May and October–November. Humidity is high, and visitors should expect cool mornings and occasional rainfall even during dry seasons.
