Located in southwestern Kenya, the Maasai Mara borders Tanzania’s Serengeti, forming one of Africa’s most iconic wildlife ecosystems. It lies approximately 260 km from Nairobi and is accessible via road or daily flights.
Animals Found:
The Mara is home to the Big Five—lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard, and rhino—as well as cheetahs, hyenas, giraffes, zebras, hippos, crocodiles, and over 500 bird species. It is most famous for hosting the Great Wildebeest Migration, one of the world’s greatest wildlife spectacles.
Best Time to Visit:
The best time to visit is July to October, during the migration season, when millions of wildebeest cross the Mara River. However, the reserve offers superb wildlife viewing all year round.
Weather Conditions:
The Mara has a moderate climate, with temperatures averaging 20–27°C during the day. Rainy seasons occur in April–May and November, but even then, wildlife remains abundant.
